The Littlest Art & Craft Fair 2014

The Littlest is a week earlier this year. I'm looking forward to it and to having no craft fairs of my own in December. Hoping that means I will be more organized and relaxed for Christmas. We'll see if that actually happens.  I'm having some supersoft, fine wale corduroy skirts at the sale this year for the first time.  Here are some photos of the colour options. Also one woodland print in cotton that I debate keeping for myself...!  I had many requests for my little zipper change purses at the Cranberry Fair last weekend so I've managed to whip up a few of those for tomorrow. Saturday the 29th, 10 to 5pm - see you there.

Cranberry Fair 2014

I am excited to be participating in this year's Cranberry Fair, especially in it's new location - The Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. It's a beautiful building, I won't mind spending the day there. Hope to see you there too. 11 til 4pm, Sunday, November 23rd. That's 2 short weeks away - EEP!

Double Trouble Pop-up Shop

Hello folks! I've been a terrible blogger! This Saturday I will be trying not to spend all my money while I hang out at The Collective Good with Monika (super talented illustrator!) and Jen (super awesome shop owner!) at our meet the maker Pop-up Shop. I'll have 18 or so new skirts to show and sale, this will be the last batch til Fall as I'm hoping not to sew (much) during our all too short summer! Come by and say hello!

The Trunk Show and Sale with a hint of Vintage!

It's coming! This year's trunk show promises to be a beautiful selection of the handmade and, new this year, the preloved. We will have vintage clothing and housewares. Something we've talked about including in the past and this year we're finally getting it together! I will have a nice selection of my A-line skirts, many with a bicycle theme.  Come by and say hello at The Chocolate Claim, Sunday, May 4th from 10 til 4pm. We'll have some yummy food, coffee and tea to share too so plan to spend some time with us.

My Apron Makes a TV Debut!

The lovely and talented Miche Genest of The Boreal Gourmet was wearing one of my aprons on TV this morning! Here is the link to the show, I'm not sure how long it will be here but it's worth a try. She is a local chef (and my neighbour!) and is busy writing her second cookbook (see TV interview). The apron pattern is from one of my favourite sewing books Simple Sewing. A thank you to Laurel Perry, another local talent behind the super cute sketches in Miche's first cookbook, who I think is the one that gave Miche the apron as a gift!

Putting My Market Bags to Work!

Some oldies and some goodies. I love it when I remember to bring my market bags to the grocery store (and feel extra guilty when I forget them since I make the darn things!). I'm happy to have some Market Bags for sale locally at The Collective Good. Did you hear their big news? They've moved to a space 10 times as big as the old shop and are also carrying modern furniture from Canadian made EQ3. The new space is just down the hall from the old, you can't miss it. Windows, a plant wall, spacious change room and more await you!

The Voila Blouse

I found this pattern from CaliFaye Collection via this online magazine Stylo. Both excellent resources for modern children's wear patterns. I made 2 for some February Birthday girls and they wore them right away I'm told - but removed them during spaghetti supper!

Bike Skirts Coming Soon!

Feeling like I've hit the big time when I received bolts of Japanese cotton/linen by Echino! The fabrics are brown, pink and green, not quite this vivid as the camera was in vivid mode by accident!! See below for a skirt photo in pink. These prints are discontinued for now and will be made into a-line skirts for this year's Arts, Crafts and Vintage Trunk Show on May 4th. Hope to see you there!

Mom's Fox Fur Hat c. 1972

I have good memories of my mom's fox fur hat, admittedly not this one as I'm about 6 or 8 months old here. Here's a note from Mom: WOW, what a hat. I'm sure that you will enjoy it as much as I did mine. I purchased mine from Sears at Yorkdale. It was with Christmas money from Grandma and Grandpa MacStephen. Latterly I told people that it had been a road-kill in the County because there was such an anti fur campaign. A few things about this photo (no, it's not instagram, it's the real thing!): the building I think is the school my mom taught at before having me so perhaps we're on our way to visit the staff and students, I'll have to ask Mom. Check out that wicker carriage! Not exactly a baby jogger eh? And how about my mom's coat, ah the 70's, love it too. Now back to the fox! Last Christmas I asked Forest for a fox fur so I could make my own hat. One year later (!) I finally tackled it. Covered in fur I managed to make a lovely hat this morning, in fact I'm wearing it right now. The fur is from the Yukon Trappers Association, just around the corner from our house. As it turns out, he was a bit small. By the time I measured my head and made the pattern pieces, I actually had to cut 2 semi circles for the top circle of the hat. Luckily the fur looks great no matter how you put it together! Here are some photos of the adventure...

Fur everywhere!

Some hand stitching. I love how unorthodox working with fur is - you get to use a ball point pen to mark your cutting lines on the leather, crazy! The needle is called a Glover, it has a tapered point with 3 sharp edges to cut through the hide.

There is a name for the lining I used, but I can't remember. It's for winter coat lining, satin on one side and flannel on the other, a lovely, silky, warm fabric...hmpf, can't remember...

Voila! It's big! I mean it fits perfectly but the fur is big!

Still covered in fur but pretty happy! Thank you Mr. Fox.

6 Dino/Dragon Tails

We had 6 kids under 7 here for Boxing Day! What fun we had and then I threw six Dino Tails in to the mix just for fun! I've made these before for birthday presents and they are so fun to make. The tutorial is from the blog Running with Scissors here and it's terrific. I highly recommend this project, if you need one! Smiles all around, infact, you might consider making an adult size!

Due to the encouragement (and shock) of clients and friends, I have finally taken the etsy plunge! It's pretty exciting. Just Quilty Pants for now, we'll see how they do. Ironically, this blog's first post was a Quilty Pants post! Must be because these pants are 100% designed, tested and made by me. Star Skirt Slacker

Here at georgianna craft inc. we like to keep our employee happy. One of the perks on the job is allowing our employee to make something for herself after a hectic week of production for the company. Her latest reward, whipped up today, is shown here, a star skirt, which she hopes to wear to the Littlest on December 7th. The fabric is a canvas from IKEA a few years ago and she is very pleased with the results. Even if she grew up knowing not to wear white after Labour Day weekend...!

Getting Ready for the Cranberry Fair

This weekend, Sunday to be precise, is the Cranberry Fair craft show here in Whitehorse. I really enjoy this fair and was really mad at myself when I botched my application last year. When I attended as a vendor in 2011 it was so much fun - I especially enjoyed being on the other side of the table as it can be very busy when you are a buyer instead of a seller! I really enjoy hearing who people are planning on giving their purchases to. There are lots of good stories and destinations too. Being a craft vendor in Whitehorse is a thrill as often your wares will end up across the country and sometimes across the globe. As a vendor I also love to catch up with friends I see in the crowd that I don't normally see day to day. The Tote No. 5, shown above, is made from some 1978 home dec fabric from my mother in law's fabric stash. It's really beautiful in person, with birds, bugs and cherry blossoms, or maybe pussy willows... I'm looking forward to Sunday and hope that my sewn goods will find new homes this Christmas. See you there!

Christmas Quilties

Sewing these up was a mouth watering experience. Another quilty pant first - 20 pairs of Christmas Quilties have been delivered to Angellina's Toy Boutique - not sure if they are putting them out right away or saving them for a bit.

A new top for me - reward for the 85 Quilty Pants!

This fabric has been tempting me on my sewing table for the past few weeks during Quilty-Pant-Fest! It's a Denyse Schmidt print from the Chicopee collection, kind of like a reproduction 1940s print. I used a favourite Simplicity pattern 3835 that I've made (here, here, here here and here. It was super quick, under an hour, to sew up. I also like this photo for how it shows my sewing room... late at night... after making quilty pant pair number 86 just in time for a special birthday boy. I timed myself on those pants - 22 minutes. Can you say sweat shop?!

85 Pairs!?

I survived sewing 85 pairs of quilty pants this month. That's 170 legs, 340 layers of fabric! They will all be in Angellina's Toy Boutique today. What have I learned? Well, I think 85 might be too many to sew at one time. I've been dieing to switch gears and make myself something as a treat (which I hope to show shortly). I also have a bunch more fall corduroy skirts to sew for The Collective Good... and some wool bags for them too. I'm really excited to have all this sewing work, it really is fun. I'll never get rich but my daily routine is very rewarding. I've even managed to fit in some exercise here and there which probably adds to my satisfaction on the job. I've also managed to successfully get myself into the Cranberry Fair, a local arts and crafts fair in November. So I'll be busy making for that sale too. 'Tis the season to sew sew sew!
